Here we are again, ladies and gentlemen! Yesterday was another exciting day at Decathlon Premier Padel Rotterdam. Our Dutch ladies, Bo Luttikhuis and Janine Hemmes, were lucky losers and got to compete in the main draw. They fought hard for almost an hour, but ultimately had to admit defeat to a top 50 pair: 6-1, 6-0. Despite the score, they can be proud of their efforts — it shows how high the international level has become.
The rest of the day saw no major surprises. Most of the seeded pairs won their matches convincingly in two sets. At this early stage of the tournament, the difference in level between the top players and the rest is still clearly visible: the favorites are marching steadily forward.
However, there was one match that caught the attention. A real thriller lasting 2 hours and 22 minutes, in which Sanyo Gutiérrez and Gonzalo Alfonso made a magnificent comeback: 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 against Martín Di Nenno and Leo Augsburger — the winners of two tournaments ago, no less. Sanyo, who is in the autumn of his career, proved once again that he has the best hands on the Tour. And although Augsburger may have the hardest smash, it proved not enough to secure victory on the slower indoor courts of the Netherlands.
Today, there are more exciting matches on the program.
Paquito Navarro and Jon Sanz (seeded 5th) will take on Coki Nieto and Javi Yanguas (seeded 4th) — a top match that promises fireworks.
The women's competition will also be exciting: Ortega and Icardo will play against the world's top pair, Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría. We can also look forward to the new pair Leal and Begramini, who will take on Chingotto and Galán. And to finish off: Stupa and Lebrón will face Alfonso and Sanyo — can they spring another surprise?
