Siux Valkiria Pro 26 - Technical Review

The Valkiria Pro is Sofía Araújo’s racket and is sold by virtually every online store as the lightweight, maneuverable model in the Siux Pro line. That’s true, but for a different reason than the product descriptions suggest. The short conclusion up front: this is the most forgiving racket in the line, and that’s because its stiffness comes from the face rather than the core.

What the scale says

A tested unit weighed 355 grams out of the box, with a balance point of 26.5 centimeters. The manufacturer’s specifications range from 340 to 360 grams, so this unit is at the upper end of the range—and yet it’s the lightest of the three Siux Pro models measured. The Electra Pro weighed 370 grams, and the Fenix Pro weighed 360 grams.

The comparison with the Electra is the most interesting. It has exactly the same balance point of 26.5 centimeters, but weighs fifteen grams more. As previously noted regarding that racket, you should always consider balance point and weight together, and here you have the textbook example: two rackets with an identical balance point, one of which feels noticeably heavier in the swing than the other. Of the three, the Valkiria has the lowest swing weight, and that’s where its maneuverability comes from.

Here, too, there’s a 20-gram variation within the same model name. When purchasing in-store, ask about the weight, or weigh it yourself, because a 340-gram racket is a different racket than this one.

The Core: EVA Soft

This is where the technical difference from the other two lies, and it’s worth taking a moment to consider it.

With the Electra Pro and the Fenix Pro, the stiffness comes from the core—hard EVA beneath a stiff face. With the Valkiria, it’s the other way around. The core is soft and gives way, while the stiffness comes from the surface. As a result, the ball stays on the blade slightly longer without slowing down the ball release. You get directional control from the blade and ball feel from the core, rather than one coming at the expense of the other.

That’s also where the price comes in. If the stiffness comes from the surface, the power can’t come from the core, because it barely rebounds. And at 355 grams, it doesn’t come from the mass either. Of the three, this racket has the lowest power ceiling, and that’s not a shortcoming but the other side of the same choice: you trade off top speed for a racket that absorbs your mistakes.

The frame: 24K Carbon Aluminized

Here, too, the “K” number only indicates how many thousand filaments are in a bundle and says nothing about the final stiffness. With this face, the difference lies in the word that follows it. “Aluminized” means that aluminum has been incorporated into the carbon layer, which makes the face stiffer and more responsive without adding thickness.

What you feel is a blade that barely flexes, with a somewhat metallic response upon contact. That sounds harsh—and in and of itself, it is—but here it’s mounted on a soft core rather than a hard one. That combination is why this racket behaves differently than the spec sheet suggests.

Blade Shape and Balance Point

The Valkiria has a teardrop shape with a center balance. The sweet spot is located slightly above the center of the head, higher than on a round-shaped head and significantly lower than on the Fenix Pro’s geometric template. More important than the position here is the size: the soft core enlarges the sweet spot, because the foam absorbs some of the energy during off-center contact instead of letting it leak away. That’s why this is the best defensive racket of the three, and the shape isn’t the reason for that.

At 355 grams and 26.5 centimeters, the maneuverability promised by online retailers is indeed accurate. However, it doesn’t stem from the head shape—which is virtually identical to that of the Electra Pro—but rather from the weight that’s missing.

Tuning with dampeners

The Valkiria also no longer comes factory-equipped with ShockOut dampeners in the head. They’re available separately, and on a racket with a soft core, they have a different effect than on the other two models. That’s because the core and dampeners work on different levels: the core absorbs the impact, while the dampeners eliminate residual vibration from the face itself. So you can increase the damping here without losing ball feel.

If you hit hard, this is no luxury. A soft core has limited deformation capacity, and on a full smash, that capacity is exhausted before the ball leaves the racket face. From that point on, the foam no longer absorbs any shock, and the impact travels directly through the carbon to your wrist and elbow. With this racket in particular, the dampeners are therefore not just a cosmetic addition.

When it comes to tuning, the familiar principle applies: at 0.9 grams each, a single dampener barely affects your total weight, but its contribution to swing weight increases with the square of the distance to your wrist. Of the three, this is the only racket where placing dampeners toward the top is worth considering. With the Fenix Pro, it’s recommended to place everything at the bottom, since that frame is already top-heavy enough. Here, however, there’s actually room: at 355 grams with the lowest swing weight of the three, you can place dampeners in the top rows of holes and gain power without the racket immediately becoming sluggish. If you want to use it purely as a control racket, leave the top rows of holes empty.
